Tonewoods of the world

Timbers used for the Tops of Guitars
Western Red Cedar
European Spruce
Engelmann Spruce
Redwood
Timbers used for the Back and Sides

There are of course many other timbers available that are suitable as tone woods. I get many requests to make instruments from various timbers that people have and are keen to use. Some of these I will work with and others I will not. This is mostly based on acoustic properties of the various pieces of timber, and sometimes the timber is just not of a suitable quality. I am very fussy about what timbers I will use to build a concert guitar. To find out how I choose the timbers that I use and all about their acoustic properties, click here -> Acoustic properties
